In February 1988 Renault displayed a radical new race car at the French Motor Show. The Renault 21 Turbo 4x4 was built for the French Superproduction Championship for works drivers Ragnotti and Bousquet. The cars had a transversely mounted 4 cylinder 1995cc turbo engine giving around 430bhp with a dry weight of 1220kgs. Renault took the project a step further by running a prestigeous one-make series in 1989 + 1990 with a field of identical 21 turbos in 300 bhp form. The 21s acted as support race for some of the Formula 1 races , including Monaco , as had previously the Renault 5 turbo and Alpine V6 cars. The only British round was however in support to the World Sports Prototype round at Donington . I can tell you the field of Renault 21s was the very definition of a `train of cars` ! One of the cars , believed to be the race runner-up`s Michael Bleekemolen`s car would in time find its way to the UK and into the hands of Bob Claxton. Bob has campaigned the car in class B of the BARC NW Sports / Saloons before expanding his race programme with the CSCC Special Saloons.

THE CAR :
Believed to be the first of the Suzuki clones built as it was debuted by Alan Humberstone in the 1983 BARC Wendy Wools Championship. Alan raced this at Lydden to as did next owner Brian Davis until around 2006. The car then headed north as was run by Andy Wilson in the 2008 BARC NW Sports / Saloons and Darlington District MC Championship . This was continued by David Brewis who bought the car in 2010 and in 2014 gained 4 class wins out of 4 race appearances in the CSCC that year.
For 2015 a new Suzuki Powertec 1500cc engine was fitted rated around 250 bhp.
The Bowlby Suzuki returns to the track at Mallory this weekend ! This famous little car came up for Auction last February and is to be raced by Paul Turner this weekend. A genuine period Wendy Wools car and built in the 1980's by Ben Bowlby who went on to become the top man at Nissan Motorsport Europe and designed the extraordinary Nissan DeltaWing Le Mans car.
The car was also the first 1-litre Castle Combe GT car to lap at 100-mph with next owner Mike Brend ,August 1992. As in period the car uses a Kawasaki Bike engine.
