THE CAR :

When Danny Morris crossed the finish line to win the last race of the 2013 season , having started at the back of the grid ,to pip `Baby Bertha` by just 0.22 of a second it was almost the stuff of fantasy.

The brother team of Danny and Ricky Morris had waited a long 20 years to get back into racing after their creation the Peugeot 309 had been retired damaged after a second heavy crash at the height of the Thundersaloon era.

The brothers had already enjoyed 2 seasons running a Peugeot 205 in the smaller class B of Thundersaloons ,using a 280 bhp Manta 2.4 engine.

Finishing 5th in class in 1990 and 4th in 1991 the boys decided on a new car for 1992.

Car builder Ray Addis being largely responsible for what was recieved as a very decent end product , built to a real world budget. Quite distictive too in anthracite Grey with pink Revolution wheels. The car was a closer match to the class B Startlets , Astra , Manta + M3 oppostion. A class win at Brands in June 1992 was a highlight for the team at the brothers local track. Sadly though at Snetterton the car had a bad crash in heavy rain , running into the back of the Chatfield M3 forcing the race to be stopped completly. The boys had to rebuild the car and it was displayed at the Earls Court Motor Racing Show the following February. With class B gone from Thundersaloons for 1993 a more powerful engine was installed in the 309 to help match the sole class A cars. So a Cosworth YB Turbo unit was fitted , giving up to 490 bhp. It wasnt the only 309 in 1993 and shouldn`t be confused with the Fast Lane sponsored version of Paul McMillan. The come back was short lived however as multi car incident at Paddock Hill bend in qualifying at Brands damged the front of the car again and this time the team reluctantly had to call it a day.

Fast forward 20 years and the Special Saloon revival was the clarion call to get the old car repaired and back on track. The teams website documents in detail their first season back racing , 2013 . The team made it to every venue and a double class win for the brothers at Cadwell Park was bettered by that overall win at Snetterton. The team pulling round superbly after losing the car`s Diff at the start of the weekend.

Steady development, solid reliability and some consistantly fast driving netted the brothers 3 more outright wins in 2014 , including a `double` at Brands. Win number 5 came at Silverstone 2015.

As the Editor of Fastcar Magazine Danny had been

involved with a project involving a Peugeot 309 being built up using running gear from a Tiga Group C2 car , the Manta engine from the 205 and clothed with an adapted Dimma body styling kit.
